How to Add Mods to Your Factorio Server
Adding mods to your Factorio server can enhance gameplay and provide new features, but it’s important to follow the right steps to avoid issues. This guide will walk you through the process of adding mods and connecting to your server using FTP.
Step by Step Guide
- Download the mod from the website or in-game. You can find mods at https://mods.factorio.com/.

- Shut down your server. Before making any modifications to your server files, it is crucial to shut down your server to prevent data corruption. This ensures a smooth upload process and keeps your server data intact.
- Connect to FTP. If you are new to FTP, you can find a detailed guide on how to connect here.
- Upload the mod file(s) to the mods folder located at
/Server/mods
in your server directory. The files are .zip and must be kept compressed or they won't work. If you've installed mods automatically from the in-game mod browser, the client installed mods will be found in\USER\AppData\Roaming\Factorio\mods
.

- Once the mod files have been uploaded, restart your server. The mods should now be applied and ready for use!

Mods must be installed on both client and server, however, when joining a server, the game will offer to synchronize the mods on client-side automatically.
Troubleshooting Tips
If you encounter any issues while adding mods, consider the following:
- Overhaul mods may require a new world to be created, as the existing terrain may not be compatible.
- Always check for each mod's dependencies by looking in the mod browser (both in-game and on the website) for any necessary requirements.
