How to Load an Uploaded Save in Aska Server

How to Upload a Save in your Aska Server

Your tribe has grown, and your settlement’s saga deserves a permanent home. Moving your local Aska save to a dedicated server allows your community to play and build even when you aren't online. However, because of how Aska links save files to specific IDs, simply dragging and dropping the folder isn't enough.

If you want to continue your local save in a server, you can do it by following three basic steps (we'll delve into the details but to let's simplify it so it's easier to understand):

  1. Upload your save to the server
  2. Edit meta file in the server save folder
  3. Edit pp_savefile_id.txt to match the save folder

How the save system works

The Aska save system connects your SteamID with a server save identifier. To successfully load your save (world and player), both your server and the game client must use the same folder ID.
The save structure follows this format: "savegame" followed by a randomly generated "Save ID" and a date.

For example:
savegame_ea3fe_270625105020

The game will automatically try to load the latest save unless you specify a different save ID in a file called pp_savefile_id.txt.

Server files can be managed via FTP, and save folders can only be accessed through FTP since they reside in a hidden directory. While you can use the File Manager from the left side panel on our website to manage other files, it cannot be used for save data in Aska. For a first-time FTP connection, refer to our detailed FTP guide here.

Before starting any modifications to your server files through FTP, make sure to shut down your server. Making changes while the server is running may corrupt data and break the server.

Steps for Uploading a Save to Your Server

  1. Shutdown the server:
Go to your server's configuration panel at “My Server” > “Manage Servers”. Once here, click on the “Actions” option on the left panel to shut it down.

  2. Connect to your FTP and navigate to the save folders:
Locate the saves folder in AppData_LocalLow_Sand Sailor Studio_Aska_data_server_.

  3. Find the desired save on your PC:
Go to the AppData save folder in your PC at: C:\Users\USER\AppData\LocalLow\Sand Sailor Studio\Aska\data.

You can use the command %userprofile%\AppData\LocalLow\Sand Sailor Studio\Aska\data in the Run command (Win+R) to open it directly.

  4. Upload the save folder:
Move your desired saved folder to AppData_LocalLow_Sand Sailor Studio_Aska_data_server_ on your server.

  5. Copy the save ID without the savegame_ prefix:
For example, savegame_56313_071125162115 will be 56313_071125162115.

  6. Edit the "meta" file located in the AppData_LocalLow_Sand Sailor: Studio_Aska_data_server_. You can use an FTP client like FileZilla that has a “View/Edit” function. After you save the file locally, it will prompt you to save it back to the server. If it doesn’t, download, edit, and re-upload it manually.

An example of the edit is shown below:

    <Object>
      <String name="session">56313_071125162115</String>
    </Object>

  7. Locate the file named pp_savefile_id.txt in the root folder of the server:
Go to the main “Server” folder in the server and locate the pp_savefile_id.txt file there.

  8. Edit pp_savefile_id.txt with the copied save ID:
Right click on the file to Edit it and paste the copied ID inside, replacing the old one.

  9. Restart the server:
After saving all the new changes in both files, you may restart the server. Locate the same “Actions” option in the server's configuration panel, in our website, and click on “Restart”.

  1. Enjoy your world!
That's it, now you may play your saved sessions with all your friends.

Troubleshooting

Conclusion

Your saga continues uninterrupted! You have successfully migrated your local Aska world to your dedicated server. By manually syncing the Save IDs, you've tricked the server into recognizing your existing history, allowing you and your tribe to pick up exactly where you left off—only now with the power and persistence of a dedicated host.

The process of matching IDs in the meta and pp_savefile_id.txt files is the most critical part. If you ever find yourself loading into a fresh world instead of your own, those two files are the first places to check.
