How to Back Up Your Space Engineers Server
Backing up your Space Engineers server is crucial to ensure that all your hard work is safe, especially if you're experiencing technical issues or want to migrate from another host. In this guide, we'll walk you through the backup, restore, and migration processes step by step. Remember, always shut down your server before modifying files to avoid data corruption. Let’s get started!
Backup
- Shut down your server: Always begin by shutting down your server to prevent any data corruption. This ensures that no game data is being modified while you're trying to create a backup.
- Connect to FTP: For detailed instructions on how to connect through FTP, check our comprehensive guide here.
- Locate the save file for the desired world: Browse to the folder PPServer/Saves to find for the save file of the world you want to back up.
- Download your world's save folder: Once you've found the right folder, download it to your local computer to create a backup.

- Restart the server: Once your backup is complete, you can restart the server to continue playing.
Restore
- Shut down your server: Just like the backup process, start by shutting down your server to prevent any corruption.
- Connect to FTP: Refer to our FTP guide here for detailed steps on how to connect.
- Upload your backed-up save folder: Go to the PPServer/Saves directory and upload your backed-up folder. If you need to overwrite an existing save, simply delete the old folder before uploading the new one.

- Check server configuration: Ensure that your server is set to load the correct world. Set “Ignore Last Session” to true so that it loads the desired world. This prevents the server from loading a different world save.

Restart your server: Once everything is set, restart your server to load the restored save.
Migrate from Another Host or Local Server
- Shut down your server: Just as in the previous steps, begin by shutting down your server.
- Connect to FTP: Use our guide here for FTP connection instructions.
- Locate the save file for the desired world: Navigate to the PPServer/Saves directory to find the world folder corresponding to the world you want to migrate.
- Upload your save folder: Upload the save folder to PPServer/Saves in your server.

- Check server configuration: Make sure the server is configured to load the correct world. Again, ensure “Ignore Last Session” is set to true, and that the world name matches the name of your save folder.

- Restart your server: Finally, restart your server to ensure everything is working correctly.

Troubleshooting
If you have problems, these are a few common issues that you might run into:
- Corrupt save files can prevent the server from loading correctly.
- Forgetting to set the scenario to match the world save will cause the game to load another world (save).
Not shutting down the server before making changes can lead to corrupted data.
