How to Add Config Files to Mods in Your tMod Terraria Server
Managing files on your Terraria server can feel daunting, especially if you're not familiar with the technical aspects of game servers. Luckily, there are two main ways to manage your server files: through SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol) or via the File Manager located on the left side panel of your hosting dashboard.
If you're new to SFTP, check out our guide on how to connect through SFTP.
Before making any modifications, it’s crucial to shut down your server. This helps prevent any data corruption that could break your server.
Steps to Customize Your Mods
Some mods in Terraria require specific config files to be uploaded to make them work properly. You can find these config files in C:\Users\USER\Documents\My Games\Terraria\tModLoader\ModConfigs.
You can open this path by using the “Run” app in Windows. Click on Start and type “Run” to open it, once there, copy and paste this path: %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Terraria\tModLoader\ModConfigs
Alternatively, you can access the mod folder in-game by clicking the Workshop → Manage Mods → Open Mod Folder button.

Follow these steps to add your config files to the mods in your tMod Terraria server:
- Before uploading or changing any files, make sure your server is completely stopped to prevent issues by going to Actions, then Shutdown.

- Connect to your server using SFTP by following this guide: How to connect to FTP or SFTP, or open the File Manager to locate
Server/mods/tModLoader/.

- Create a directory named
ModConfigs(Ensure it’s spelled exactly like that, as any variation will result in it not working.)

OPTIONAL: If you want to modify a mod, navigate to Workshop→Manage Mods→Mod Configuration. Select the mod you want to adjust, making sure to choose server config rather than client.
- Upload the config file you wish to use (typically, config files contain only the modified lines, so they should be quite short and simple).

- Restart your server by going to Actions, then Restart, for the changes to take effect.

Troubleshooting
Here are some common issues you might encounter:
- The mod isn’t taking changes: Make sure you restarted your server and that all files and directories are correctly named. Additionally, verify that the config file is appropriate for server configuration and not for the client.
- I can’t find the “mods” folder: If you’re using an older server, it’s possible that the mod config files are stored in a hidden folder only visible through FTP. If you connect through FTP, you'll see the MyDocuments folder, which contains the ModConfigs folder.
Conclusion
You have successfully fine-tuned your world! By manually managing your ModConfigs folder, you aren't just playing with mods—you are curating the exact experience you want for your players. Whether you're tweaking boss difficulty, adjusting spawn rates, or balancing new items, you now have total control over how your server behaves.
Remember, these files are powerful. If a mod starts acting strangely after a change, double-check your syntax or revert to the original file. If you have any questions or need assistance, feel free to reach out to our customer care agents through our live chat or email at [email protected].
