How to Set Admin and Player Passwords on Your StarRupture Server

Whether you want to keep your server private for friends or secure administrative access for yourself, setting a password is essential.

However, StarRupture handles passwords differently from most games. You cannot simply type a plain password into a text file. Instead, the game requires passwords to be encrypted (hashed) into specific JSON files.

This guide will walk you through generating these secure files and adding them to your server using the File Manager.

Step 1: Stop Your Server

Before adding or modifying any configuration files, you must stop the server to prevent conflicts.

  1. Go to your Server Panel.
  2. Click on the Actions tab and select Shutdown, and wait for the status to show "Stopped".

Step 2: Generate Your Encrypted Passwords

Since the server cannot read plain text passwords, you must convert them using a specific utility tool.

  1. Open the StarRupture Password Encryptor tool here:  StarRapture Password Encryptor
  2. Enter your desired passwords in the Inputs section on the left:
    • Admin Password: Enter the password you want to use for admin commands.
    • Player Join Password: Enter the password players must type to join the server.
  3. Click the Encrypt button.
  4. The site will generate the specific code you need on the right side.

Keep this tab open, as you will need to copy these codes in the next step.

Step 3: Create the Password Files

You now need to create two specific files in your server's File Manager to store these encrypted codes.

A. Setting the Admin Password

  1. Navigate to the File Manager tab in your Server Panel, then click the Create File button.

  2. A pop-up will ask for the file name. Name it exactly: Password.json and click Create.

This is Case Sensitive. It must be capitalized exactly as shown.

  1. Go back to the utility website and click the Copy Password.json button.

  2. Paste that code into your new file on the server. It should look something like this:

    { "Hash": "YOUR_LONG_ENCRYPTED_STRING_HERE" }

  3. Click the Save File button to save your changes.

B. Setting the Player Join Password

  1. In the File Manager, click the Create File button again.

  2. Name this file exactly: PlayerPassword.json and click Create.

  3. Go back to the utility website and click the Copy PlayerPassword.json button.

  4. Paste the code into this new file.

  5. Click the Save File button.

Step 4: Restart the Server

  1. Go back to the Actions tab and click Restart.

Your server is now protected! Players will be prompted for the password upon connecting, and you will have secure admin access.

Conclusion

Your server is now secure! By using the encryption utility and manually creating these JSON files, you ensure that only authorized survivors can access your world.

If you need to change your password in the future, simply repeat these steps: generate a new hash on the website, open your existing file in the File Manager, and paste the new code over the old one.

Happy Gaming!
