How to Back Up and Restore a World in your Romestead Server
Learn how to safely back up, upload, and restore Romestead worlds via SFTP or File Manager, with troubleshooting tips and name checks.
How are saves handled in Romestead
Romestead stores game data in two places:
Character data (player) is tied to each account and kept on your computer.
World data (map) is stored on the server.
How to back up the world
Each world is its own folder inside the server save location. That means backing up a world is simply a matter of downloading the correct world folder from the server and saving it somewhere safe. Later you can upload that folder back to restore the world.
Do not try to copy or download saves while the server is running, the files can be in use and incomplete.
Shut down your server:
Open your control panel by going to My Servers > Manage Server. Once here, click the Actions option on the left panel.
Locate the server files:
Open File Manager in the panel or connect with SFTP (your SFTP credentials are in the same left panel).
Navigate to the world save location:
OpenServer/saved_worldsfolder. You will see one folder per world.
(You can identify your current save folder name by checking the set name under the Basic Settings panel)
Download your desired world:
Locate the specific world folder you want to back up and click on the 3 dots on the right side to download it. If you want to back up everything, download the entiresaved_worldsfolder.
Restart your server:
When the download finishes, restart your server so players can continue playing. Click on the same Actions option and select Restart.
How to restore a world
Make sure you have the backed-up world folder ready on your computer.
Shut down the server:
Open your control panel by going to My Servers > Manage Server. Once here, click the Actions option on the left panel.
Locate the server files:
Open File Manager in the panel or connect with SFTP (your SFTP credentials are in the same left panel).
- Open the default saves folder:
Navigate toServer/saved_worlds, which should have at least one folder inside.
Rename or delete the existing folder:
You can either delete or use the already created folder to load your backup. For example, renameMyWorldtoMyWorld_oldso there is no naming conflict.
Click on the 3 dots on the right side to manage the folder.
Upload your backed-up world folder:
After renaming/deleting the old folder, upload your save intoServer/saved_worlds.
Set your folder name to load:
Inside the Basic Settings panel, make sure the World Name or theAutoStartWorldNamein yourconfig.jsontemplate exactly matches the folder name you uploaded.
Restart the server:
Click on the Actions panel again and Restart the server to play your saved session.
How to upload and load a world (from your local machine)
If you've played the game locally, you can upload your world into the server to play with your friends.
Find your local Romestead saved world:
On Windows you can open Run (Windows+R) and paste:%appdata%\Romestead\EA\profiles\1\saved_worlds. Or navigate toC:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Romestead\EA\profiles\1\saved_worlds.
Shut down your server from the control panel:

- Open File Manager or connect with SFTP and go to
Server/saved_worlds. Upload the world folder you found on your PC into
Server/saved_worlds.
Be careful not to accidentally upload the folder inside another folder (a common mistake when using some FTP clients).
Make sure the World Name in Basic Settings or the
AutoStartWorldNamein yourconfig.jsontemplate matches the uploaded folder name exactly.
Example: if your folder isPingplayersWorld, set World Name toPingplayersWorldorAutoStartWorldName: "PingplayersWorld"in your template.
Start the server to load the uploaded world.
Go to the Actions panel and click Restart to turn the server on.
Troubleshooting
- If you uploaded the world but the server still shows an empty or default world, first make sure you fully restarted the server after changing files. Also verify the World Name is spelled exactly the same (including capitalization) as the folder you uploaded.
- If a download or upload is failing, the server is probably still running and locking the files. Shut the server down and try again.
- If uploads succeed but the world doesn't appear, check that you uploaded the folder directly into
Server/saved_worldsand not into an extra parent folder (for example, avoidServer/saved_worlds/MyWorld/MyWorld/...). - If you are unsure or something still looks wrong (missing files, corrupted saves), keep the original package you downloaded and contact support before deleting anything further.
