How to Back Up and Migrate Your VEIN Server Data

That's why creating a backup is the most important skill for any survivor. This guide will show you how to safeguard your world by creating a manual backup. We'll also cover how to restore that backup (or migrate a save from another server) to get you back in the fight.

Important: Shut Down Your Server First!

Before you ever move, delete, or upload a save file, you must shut down your server. Go to Actions > Shutdown in your control panel. Editing files while the server is running is the fastest way to corrupt your world and lose everything.

Step-by-Step Instructions to Back Up your VEIN Server Data

1. Shut Down Your Server: Before making any changes to your server files, it's important to shut down your server by going to Actions > Shutdown. This prevents potential data corruption that could occur if files are altered while the server is running.

2. Access File Manager or Connect to FTP: - To use File Manager, click on the option in the left side menu of your PingPlayers account. - If you prefer using FTP, you can learn how to connect by following our FTP guide here.

3. Locate Your Save File: Navigate to the following directory: Server/Vein/Saved/SaveGames/Server.vns

4. Download the Save File: Click the three dots next to Server.vns and download the file. We recommend naming the downloaded file with the date and time for easy tracking, for example, "Vein backup October 1st 10:20 AM".

5. Restart the Server: Once the backup is complete, you can restart your server by going to Actions > Restart to continue playing.

Restoring Data from a Backup

If you need to restore your server from a backup:

4. Upload your backed-up save file through FTP or File Manager. Make sure to name it exactly as Server.vns so that the server can recognize and use it.

5. Restart your server to load the save by clicking Actions > Restart.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

• Issue: "I can't delete or rename the Server.vns file!"
  • Solution: Your server is still running. The file is "in use," which locks it. You must go to Actions > Shutdown in your control panel first.

  • Solution: You missed Step 3. The server only looks for one file: Server.vns. If it can't find that exact name, it may load your old file (if you didn't rename it) or generate a new world. Ensure your restored backup is named exactly Server.vns (it is case-sensitive).
• Issue: "How do I keep multiple backups on the server?"
  • Solution: You can upload as many backup files as you want (e.g., backup_Monday.vns, backup_Tuesday.vns), but the server will ignore all of them. They are just for storage. To use one, you must first rename the current Server.vns (e.g., to Server_old.vns), and then rename the backup you wish to use to Server.vns.
